Have you ever waited in line for a purchase and panicked because you knew the parking meter was about to expire any minute? After sweating and impatiently making your purchase you make a mad dash to the car only to discover you have been ticketed on account of a few minutes.
The bad news: In 2007, 300,000 drivers received tickets for “alternate-side parking rules” within 5 minutes of the expiration time. 30,000 of those tickets were written almost immediately upon the parking rule taking effect. These tickets run an average cost of $65.00 per ticket.
The good news: In November of 2009, City Council passed legislation that will allow a five minute grace period to drivers before a ticket can be issued. Mayor Bloomberg vetoed the legislation early this month; however, city council overrode the veto and the bill will take effect in March of this year.
